1. Get around the kind of people you want to recruit and start more conversations. The key to building a sustainable business is relationships, and the key to relationships is starting more conversations.  Genuine conversations can lead to fantastic business relationships, whether it’s direct recruits or referrals, or just simply networking!

2. Ask for referrals – let people know specifically WHO you are looking for.  Once those relationships are established, don’t be afriad to ask for referrals.  Help others out as well by giving them referrals, and they will return the favour!

3. Attract people by helping them first.  Reach out to people soley to see how you can help them with what THEY need, not what YOU need.

How to Get Over The Past and Use it to Your Advantage

Chances are if you’re living and breathing, there has been something happen in your past that you’re not fond of.  It can be something that has happened to you, or something you’ve done.  As human beings, it’s our nature to get hung up on these things in our past, but when it comes to our future and the kind of success we want to have in our business, it’s essential that we learn how to get over the past.

I go through a lot of courses and training.  One of the things that is always the same through all of them, is that when someone in the course experiences that “breakthrough” in their business, it’s because they realized something from the past was paralyzing them up, and they were able to conquer that!

Sometimes our past can be ugly.  Like the really ugly ugly.  You know what I mean? Most of us had something happen to us in our childhood, or were spoken to in a certain way that has absolutely dictated the person that we’ve grown into.  If we haven’t learned how to work through that pain, or those words, or whatever has happened to us, those emotions and feelings tie us up and hold us back from our success and our greater destiny.

I’ve definitely had my share of pain, and I definitely haven’t dealt with it perfectly.  But what I did learn is how to use it for my gain.  I understood that my past was hard….but my future is amazing, and one has NOTHING to do with the other, unless you allow the past to creep into your present!

So How DO you get over the past? This step can be really hard to do.  It takes time, forgiveness, sometimes (a lot of times) tears….getting over the pain can be painful.  BUT, when you are able to do this, and deal with the pain, it no longer has control over you and you now have control over IT.

I wanted to share with you my most recent guest appearance on Doug Firebaugh’s Millionaire Road Radio Show.  I wasn’t really going to share this….because I get kinda DEEP.  I actually said something I wasn’t planning on sharing AT ALL.  BUT, it helped someone.  And if it helped one person during the show, maybe it will help someone that reads this and listens to the audio.

So take the time so listen, and find out how to get over the past, no matter how painful, or how long ago it was.

How To Build Your Brand: Finding Your Identity

One major step in how to build your brand is to decide on your identity.  What and Who do you want to be remembered as? What is your specialty and how do you make it so that when people think of that topic, they think of YOU?

In order to figure out exactly what your identity is going to be in your brand, you need to decide what your area of expertise is.  What is the one main focus…the CORE of your brand? Are you focusing on providing a product or a service? How, specifically, are you going to help people? Are you a skincare specialist….A travel expert….A Supplement Consultant….Do you help people increase their online strategies….. or coach people in their business? Are you a Blogging Beast..A Facebook Queen or King…..A Social Media Maven………….A Webinar Expert? When people talk about you….what do you want them to say about you? Who are you really? What do you do that people would have to say “Oh, you NEED to go see THIS person for that!” Take some time to think about that, write it all down, and decide where your main focus is going to be.

When you’ve decided what it is that is your identity, you need to BELIEVE that you are an expert in it.  Truly.  Even if you don’t feel like an expert yet….remember that the person you are talking to perceives you as the expert.  I remember when I had my first job in a clothing store.  I wore a name tag that said “Denim Expert”.  The only thing I knew about denim that others (maybe) didn’t, was that denim shrinks in length about a half of an inch, and how to mark a hem adjustment properly.  That’s it.  But everyone that came in that store thought I was an “Expert” and so did I!! I didn’t approach anyone with hesitancy, and neither should you.

The other thing to make sure of, (like we covered in a past post “Provide Value”), is that when people deal with you or hear from you, or read your posts….you leave them with the feeling that you have given them extreme Value.

When people come in contact with you face to face, or on video, or in your posts, you want them to be excited with possibility and Hope!! You want them to feel encouraged and uplifted.  Keep that consistent in all that you do!

Some people are trying some “blunt” marketing out there.  Telling it like it is I guess, and being what I would perceive as a bit rude.  The people I see being drawn to those people are pretty negative themselves.  If that’s your route, that’s cool, but marketing is SO about emotion.  So remember to pour out that value that delivers the feel-good feelings.

In Dr. Doug Firebaugh’s training on Branding he said 2 very powerful things that I will leave you with in this post.  “The more interested you are in a person, the more interesting you are to them”.  Do you hear how simple that is? Truly that’s the secret to building a massive brand and one that LASTS.  Think about that one and REMEMBER it! (or if you’re like me, write it down and tape it to something)

The second thing he said is that “BRAND” stands for “Being Remembered and Apreciated for New Directions.” Go out there and pave some new roads with your Brand baby!!! Don’t be afraid to stand out, and do something that empowers others and builds people up.  Change lives, and your life too will change!!

As we continue on today in the series on How To Build Your Brand, we’re going to talk about how important it is to be caring about what others think. Usually you see me doing a video or a post on why NOT to care about what others think….but when it comes to building your brand, this is one thing that could make or break you.

In past posts on this topic, we’ve gone over why it’s important to Be Unique, have a Powerful Message, and to really Stand Out and Be Unforgettable. All those things would sound like reasons to NOT give a rat’s hiney about what other people are saying about you. But it’s quite the opposite. What others think about you and your brand is the most important step to consider in branding.

You want to be known as someone who cares about others, and someone who is listening to the needs and opinions of their audience. Even on Social Media, usually you’re taught to not spend any time wasted on the news feed, or reading non-business related material, but being active in other people’s lives will make you memorable, and will show that you care about PEOPLE not just your business and yourself.

Spend some time answering people’s questions, or commenting on special occasions that are happening in their life! Offer words of encouragement where you see it needed. Most people DO NOT have someone in their life filling them with positive words and affirmations each and every day. BE THAT PERSON TO PEOPLE AND THEY WILL LOVE YOU. Think about it….how many people do you have each day meeting you with adversity or negativity over the choices you make and the things you do?  I have a friend Terry, who every day sends out like 15 messages telling people how awesome and amazing they are. I know he does this, because I’ve received 2 messages from him in the last few months. And let me tell you….it feels GOOD! And get this….. his coaching business and his network marketing business are flourising. Conincidence? Nope. He fills people up and they want more of him!

This is another thing that may sound like a time waster, but spend some time in some popular forums! Answer people’s questions (without any link sharing or self promotion!) and become the leader in the group. People will start to seek you more for your knowledge. My friend Tanya had a great idea too, she says she sometimes answers people’s questions with a video or a blog post! How much would you stand out if you did that right?

As my mentor Dr. Doug Firebaugh puts it best….”Grow a Person’s Self Image.” Grow a person’s self image….do you feel the power in that statement? How awesome would it be to just spend your time doing that?? Leave your narcissistic tendancies behind, and just focus on helping others. My friend Steve told me that when he finally “Got” that….that it’s truly about service, that his business EXPLODED. And it did. I’m on the same team as him, and his team is ON FIRE. He is a true Servant Leader, and you NEED to build that quality into your brand!

Always be aware that your Brand is YOUR Reputation. How you treat others, and how you behave yourself will directly reflect on your brand. There is no amount of Marketing or Ads that can replace what people think of you, AND what they’ll tell others about you. So make sure that part of your Branding efforts are spent on building up others and you’ll have customers for life!!

How to Build Your Brand Step 5: Provide Value

What is the one thing that you must do when deciding on how to build your brand? Find ways to provide value.  Providing value is the key to getting people to notice you and getting them to stay with you. So what is of value to your audience and how do you go about giving it to them?

There’s nothing worse than that guy (or girl) that is out there promoting themself, talking about how awesome they are, and why YOU should be following them.  I don’t know about you, but that “pushy marketing” style just doesn’t jive with me.  And I really don’t think that it does with most people.  The problem is, there are a lot of people out there branding themselves because they just love to talk about how awesome they are.  So you have the advantage of standing out, by providing your audience with what they are looking for – VALUE!

My Mentor, Dr. Doug Firebaugh, has said that there are two types of people; Those with a Value Focus, and those with a Volume Focus.  A Value Focus is what can you do FOR someone else, and a volume focus is what can someone else do FOR you.  If you focus on Value, the Volume alwasy shows up.  If you’re focused on the volume…you’re going to work really hard, with little results.

If you have identified your niche market and your unique message, you can provide information to that market that they are looking for.  Always make it about THEM.  How you can help them, what service you can be of to them, how you can help them reach THEIR goals and dreams.  If you constantly pour out that kind of value to your audience, they will love you for it!  (You know how you feel when someone looks at you and says “you look so tired!!!!” vs someone who comes up to you and says “oh my gosh, you look fabulous! How ARE you?”  Be that second person ALL the time to people :) Pour out the love)

Make the message, the information, and the content you put out give your audience hope of endless posibilities, show them how they can fulfill their dreams.   Make it so that every time that they hear from you they are left feeling that warm and fuzzy feeling that uplifts them throughout the rest of their day.  LOVE people, and genuinely WANT to help them.

If you have success stories of your clients, customers or team members, make sure you’re sharing THEIR success instead of yours. Talk about how they overcame some adversity or climbed to the top of that mountain.  People love stories, but you need to be telling someone else’s story, not your own.

If you really want to stand out as a brand…..Find a few people in your niche market, and edify THEM.  Share their content on social media, tell others how awesome they are, share their blog posts and have no  reason to do so, other than that you want to provide others with THEIR value.

That one step will really make you stand out, and gain you respect in your industry.  People LOVE being edified and your doing so will make them really like you.  You’ll find yourself building an amazing network within your brand, and those relationships almost always turn into referrals for you and for them.  So remember to promote people all the time.

We were all born with individual identities, characteristics, internal messages, desires, dreams, a voice, etc. Building your brand gives you the ability to embrace that inside you, celebrate it, and share it with the world!

So what does it mean to be Unique? Dr. Doug Firebaugh laid out 3 main points;

1) Do what others don’t do and what they won’t do. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the pack. It will feel scary at first, but zigging when others are zagging always pays off. People are always curious about the person who is doing things a bit differently. They may not let you know it, but they’re watching you. SO many “experts” have visited my blog off Facebook and then messaged me to tell me I need to make it all white and less cluttered like the “other” blogs out there. Pssssshhhh…My blog is me. It’s different from the norm. And I like it :)

2) Say and Brand something that you haven’t seen out there. This comes back to first identifying your niche market like in yesterday’s post on The Power of Your Message. Once you’ve done that, you can look around your niche market to see what’s missing. What isn’t being shared out there? If you were your prospect, customer, client, what need would you have that isn’t being answered out there? What questions aren’t being answered, what information is being held back? Where can you see that you can help people?

3) How are you different? When you really think about it, what do you stand for? What is your personality and the way you communicate? Being true to yourself is going to stand out like crazy. There’s nothing worse than someone faking who they are. You have to be congruent across all your marketing. So you can’t be “Holly the Helper” on Facebook, and then be “Paula the Partier” on Twitter. Who you are is who you are. Tap into that. For me, I realized that I could be who I am. I’m laid back but I get things done. I’m Easy Going, but I’m Determined as all get out. I’m Loving, but I Never give up and won’t back down. I’ve been able to put that into my marketing, and I can honestly say it’s helped me to stand out. Doors have opened to areas that wouldn’t be available if I had been pretending to be “Miss perfect, organized, my life is wonderful and easy Angel”. Do you see what I mean? Being you is TOTALLY OK!

So when you’ve decided all of the above and have figured out who you are, pick colours and images that work with that AND your product.  So for example… I’m in travel, I have the airplane in my header.  My social media cover pictures are of me at the beach.  My colours are blue, orange, sand, etc.  Those colours fit me and my personality.

If you sell something, write down why you love your product so much.  Feel those emotions and put that into your message.  Make your Brand ABOUT those things.

So when people see those colours, images, messages, and think about your product…..health…fitness…travel….makeup….skincare….whatever it is that you market….they will think of YOU! It works.  It’s a lot of work, but it works.  Branding youself is something you will NEVER regret.

How To Build Your Brand: The Power of Your Message!

There is Power in Your Message when it comes to How to Build Your Brand.  What you say and how people perceive you will ultimately determine your success.  When it comes to building your brand, you can’t hide behind any curtains…. The true you is shown through the power of your message.  So how do you start to deliver your message?

As you start to build your brand one question you must ask yourself is “what is my message“? This is an easy question to answer for some, and a complex question for others. If I’m honest, this took me a while to figure out. I started out wanting to be the female Ray Higdon (which is still a-ok with me!) so I was trying to appeal to EVERYONE in network marketing. But I realized it was hard to be congruent, trying to appeal to young marketers, older marketers, single marketers, and my crowd – the work from home and stay at home parents. My posts were a little bit all over the place, my offer really didn’t make sense, and I wasn’t really getting a following.

It took some time, and trial and error, but I realized my market was people who wanted to avoid making the most common mistakes in building a successful home business. (ie, the mistakes I made!) I wanted to help people have success SOONER than I did. That was my message! I wanted to help people who were and are struggling like I was. So… people just like me! Which goes back to what I talked about in the last post…”How to Be Unforgettable“.

The best advice I’ve ever had when it came to figuring out WHO I was trying to speak to actually came from Ray Higdon. He told me to sit down and literally draw your ideal customer avatar. What do they do? What do they like? What are their hobbies? What do they have in common with you? What are their struggles? What are their fears? Write it all down and KABLAM!!!...You’ve got your niche market!

So now that you’ve identified WHO you are delivering your message to….HOW do you deliver your message? The best platform to do this on, is Social Media. If you want to Brand yourself, and you don’t like Social Media….You might have a little problem!!

The things you say in your posts and messages to others reveals who you are. In your messages and posts you want to have POWER in what you’re saying. The Power that you’re going somewhere. Power that draws excitement out of people. Power that elevates others.

Your posts and your messages must always be positive and uplifting. You CAN’T (I repeat….CAN’T) waiver back and forth between complaining and being positive. People aren’t going to follow anyone who is negative WHATSOEVER. So if you have some posts out there complaining about the weather, your kids, your spouse, the news, celebrities, etc. Take them down now and start over. You must ALWAYS uphold your Brand in your posts. You are a business, and you need to act like one!

Have you ever been on social media and seen a “Leader” being negative? I have. I’ve seen a lot lately that claim to be “everything” that a leader should be, yet they are CUTTING people down. I don’t get it. Don’t pretend to be one way, and then turn around and BE what you “claim” to despise.  People will see right through you.

So in your posts and in your messages, make sure to use active words and memorable words. Don’t act like some “know-it-all“, but be knowledgeable. If you’re messaging with someone, answer their questions, and treat them like they are a leader also…by asking them questions!

Ask more questions than you answer and keep YOUR answers brief. Allowing someone else to talk more in a conversation really makes people like you. You’re showing that it’s not all about you, you want to know about them, and respect them. You can’t buy that kind of trust.

If you connect with people and build great relationships, make sure to send them some referrals! People who are already successful in their business and brand appreciate nothing more than someone who sends them customers! It really makes you stand out and look like a total professional in your industry.

In your content…whether that’s posts, or content on your blog….BE CONSISTENT. Like my mentor Dr. Doug Firebaugh says….”Consistency and Repetition are the most powerful tools for branding“. If you’re consistent, it shows that you are serious, and people follow people who know where they’re going. Consistenly pour out value that your followers begin to expect from you, and continue to pour it out through your entire career. Once you are comfortable with being consistent, it gets easier, and becomes a habit. You’ll start to deliver content that makes you proud, and you’ll hold yourself to a high standard that is going to stand out from the rest!!

So there you go…..figure out your message, narrow down your niche, and consistenly provide them value and powerful encouragement, and you’ll have a Brand that is UNSTOPPABLE!
