Today’s WAHM Feature is on Jeannie Stewart and her “Do You Bake?” Home business! Makes me hungry just thinking about it! Jeannie runs a business where baking is HEALTHY for her family and her kids, and that is awesome! Healthy baking is something I’ve been missing in my family! Read on to find out how Jeannie is being successful in her home business!

Q) Tell us a little about Do You Bake? and why it was a fit for you?
Do You Bake? features easy to prepare baking mixes, dips, seasonings, meal items, and even dog treats! I like to say Betty Crocker ease without the crappy additives and preservatives. I love to cook but I’m also a bit lazy so the convenience factor without the garbage was a big draw for me. I stumbled into the company by accident, the ad popped up into my facebook sidebar one evening and it offered a free signup. So I did a google search, saw nothing but good, jumped in and that was that.
Q) What’s your favourite part of being able to run a business from home?
My fave part of running a biz from home is I’m in charge of my time (mostly, I am a mom after all!). I don’t need to request time off for roller derby, or to take my kids out for a day. If my kids are sick I’m home. I don’t have massive childcare expenses and I get to bake cookies for a living.
Q) What marketing strategy do you find the most useful and productive in your business?
I am still trying to figure that out! I find I’m leaning towards relationship marketing as opposed to just trying to sell something. People love to buy, they hate being sold to
Q) As a mom, is there anything you struggle with as you work from home?
My fave feature is also my biggest struggle. Time management. You have to be disciplined. If I pop on facebook to answer a question or make a post on my fan page I have to remember to get out of the time suck! Add to that I do have my kids and my son is special needs so it can become quite the balancing act at times. My kids always come first though so I find I can do more in the evening. And that’s ok.
Q) If a mom is looking for a home business, why would Do You Bake? be a great option?
DYB is great for moms because it fits into an already existing grocery budget, your kids can help you make cupcakes (and eat them too!), and you can feel confident that your kids are getting home baked goodness without junk in it. Our line is constantly expanding and we have “Grab n Go” snacks that are perfect for recess (provided there are no nut allergies or a nut ban, my kids go to a school without a nut policy”. Moms are busy and we don’t always have time for big fancy dinners, DYB helps save us time with the dinner items available. Our quotas are crazy low (20.00/month increasing to 25.00 a month) so we are a real budget friendly company.
Q) If you could choose one favourite product you sell, which would it be?
Ohhhhh tough one! I say the Baked Enchilada Dip. So far I have used it as directed, as a spread on chicken wraps (recipe on http://yycdyb.blogspot.ca/2014/05/best-ever-chicken-wraps.html), to season ground beef for chilli/tacos.
(Ok Seriously….who’s NOT downloading THAT recipe??? YUM!)
Q) If you could start your business all over again, knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?
I might not have pushed the free sign up option as much as I did. I ended up with a massive team but zero production. I spent hours training people who never even redeemed the 50% off coupon. I realize DS is not for everyone and if someone joins and it’s not a fit that’s cool but tell me at least….
Q) As you’ve been building your business, do you have any words of advice for moms just starting out? (ie info on handling stress, making it work with kids, etc)
Take up roller derby! It’s my biggest stress relief and it’s also my best events for cash & carry items Find someone to be your sounding board when frustrated. I go to my Upline and she comes to me… Also, keep in mind that this is a business, it is not sign up today, be rich tomorrow. Anyone in DS who tells you that is lying to you. It takes time to build a business. I am now after 8 months making enough to quit the small part-time job I had. I’m in for the long haul even if that means several years. DYB is still really unknown so we have to push a bit harder to get out there.
